Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,800 m.

Subspecies
Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba delegorguei), Western Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba iriditorques) and Sao Tome Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba malherbii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include iriditorques and malherbii as subpecies of Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba delegorguei).

Forms a superspecies with Western Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba iriditorques) and Sao Tome Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba malherbii), and all may be conspecific. They are sometimes placed in a subgenus Turturoena.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • sharpei (Salvadori, 1893)   -  South-eastern Sudan through Uganda and Kenya to Tanzania (including Zanzibar).
  • delegorguei Delegorgue, 1847   -  Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique (Mt Gorongoza) to South Africa (Transkei and eastern Griqualand to Natal and western Zululand).
