North-western Argentina, in Salta, Tucumán and Santiago del Estero. Speculated to occur in Bolivia and Peru; single record from Cuzco, Peru.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Black Swift (Cypseloides niger), White-chested Swift (Cypseloides lemosi) and Sooty Swift (Cypseloides fumigatus). Sometimes considered conspecific with Sooty Swift (Cypseloides fumigatus), and possibly White-chinned Swift (Cypseloides cryptus). Older name for species, "Cypseloides major", is preoccupied by a synonym of Great Dusky Swift (Cypseloides senex).
