Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus). Commonly referred to as Blue-winged Parrotlet (Forpus xanthopterygius), which was shown in 1905 to have been applied to an immature Yellow-chevroned Parakeet (Brotogeris chiriri), but which was mistakenly reinstated in 1945 when present species was separated from Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus). Isolated subspecies spengeli might belong with Mexican Parrotlet (Forpus cyanopygius) of Mexico.

Proposed subspecies olallae included within nominate.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • spengeli (von Spix, 1824)   -  Northern Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Turquoise-winged Parrotlet (Forpus spengeli).
  • crassirostris (Taczanowski, 1883)   -  South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northern Peru to western Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Large-billed Parrotlet (Forpus crassirostris).
  • flavescens (Salvadori, 1891)   -  South-eastern Peru and eastern Bolivia.
  • flavissimus Hellmayr, 1929   -  North-eastern Brazil.
  • vividus (Ridgway, 1888)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
  • xanthopterygius (von Spix, 1824)   -  Bolivia (and south-eastern Peru?) east to north-eastern Brazil, and south to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina.
