Status VU
Loss of nesting holes due to competition with bees and illicit trade are the main threats. Loss of habitat for coconut plantations and competition with the introduced Coconut Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) may also be causes.

Voice
A raucous 'ko-kot'. A peculiar chuckling sound is uttered when feeding. Nasal hooting, shrieks and chuckles.

Subspecies
Eunymphicus cornutus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Horned Parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus) and Ouvea Parakeet (Eunymphicus uvaeensis) following Juniper and Parr (1998).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Horned Parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Introduced Coconut Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) feeds in flowering trees and has red breast.
