Food
Omnivorous. Mainly plant material but also invertebrates, and will occasionally scavenge animal carrion.
Voice
A sharp repetitive 'kek-kek-kek-kek-kek', uttered in flight or when alarmed. Constant musical chatter when feeding.

Subspecies
Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Red-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) and New Caledonian Parakeet (Cyanoramphus saisseti) following Boon et al. (2001), spelling follows Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).
Subspecies cookii and saisseti sometimes considered separate species. Subspecies erythrotis of Macquarie I and subflavescens of Lord Howe I extinct.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
saisseti Verreaux & Des Murs, 1860 - New Caledonia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, New Caledonian Parakeet (Cyanoramphus saisseti).
cookii (G. R. Gray, 1859) - Norfolk I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Norfolk Island Parakeet (Cyanoramphus cookii).
cyanurus Salvadori, 1891 - Kermadec Is.
novaezelandiae (Sparrman, 1787) - New Zealand, on North I, South I, Stewart I, Auckland Is and many offshore islands.
chathamensis Oliver, 1930 - Chatham Is.
hochstetteri (Reischek, 1889) - Antipodes Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Reischek's Parakeet (Cyanoramphus hochstetteri).
erythrotis! (Wagler, 1832) - Macquarie I. Extinct. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Macquarie Parakeet (Cyanoramphus erythrotis).
subflavescens! Salvadori, 1891 - Lord Howe I. Extinct. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lord Howe Parakeet (Cyanoramphus subflavescens).
zealandicus! (Latham, 1790) - Formerly Society Is. Extinct; last reported 1850. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus zealandicus).
ulietanus! (Gmelin, JF, 1788) - Formerly Raiatea I.(eastern Society Is.). Extinct; last reported 1773. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Raiatea Parakeet (Cyanoramphus ulietanus).
