Interior south-eastern Australia chiefly along the river systems of Murrumbidgee and Castlereagh.
 
From the Murray River, between about Albury, NSW and Barham, NSW, north and east to the upper Lachlan and Castlereagh rivers, NSW. Partially migratory, breeding in the Riverina and wintering in the Lachlan - Castlereagh region.

Nest
In a hole of a tree, very high above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
4 - 6; white; rounded; 28 - 30 x 23 - 24 mm. Incubation: about 20 days; by female.
Young
Fledge in 5 - 6 weeks.
Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Female with female and immature Red-winged Parrot (Aprosmictus erythropterus), which is slightly smaller, has a square tipped tail, and red in the wing.
