Habitat
River red gum and black box forest, mallee-spinifex, native cypress, farmlands, weedy clearings, crops, vineyards, stubble, golfcourses, in the east. Wheatbelt farmlands, timbered watercourses, woodland clearings, forests, saltbush in the west.
Northern Victoria and adjacent parts of New South Wales to the mallee areas of south-eastern South Australia, and in south-western Australia, east to Esperance.

4, sometimes 5 or 6; white; rounded; 30 - 32 x 23 - 25 mm. Incubation: about 21 days; by female.
Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 42 days.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
anthopeplus (Lear, 1831) - Through mallee wheat belt of south-western Australia.
monarchoides Schodde, 1993 - South-western New South Wales, north-western Victoria and central eastern SA (along the central Murray River between Robinvale and Morgan).
Similar Species
Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii), which is generally greener, and Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans) ('Yellow Rosella'), which is slightly smaller, has a blue cheek patch, and bone colored bill.
