Grassy woodlands, rainforest fringes, magroves, timbered watercourses, mulga, brigalow, casuarina, native-cypress scrubs, crops.

Breeding Season (Guide)
August - February in the south (NSW), April - July in the north.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree, usually far below the entrance.

Eggs (Guide)
5, occasionally 6; white; rounded; 30 - 32 x 25 - 26 mm. Incubation: about 20 days; by female. The female leaves nest to be fed by the male.

Young
Fledge in about 35 days. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythropterus (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Eastern Australia, south of Cape York Peninsula.
  • coccineopterus (Gould, 1865)   -  Northern Australia.
  • papua Mayr and Rand, 1936   -  Southern New Guinea.


Similar Species
Female Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii), which is slightly larger, lacks any red in the wing and has a pointed tail, and with female Australian King-Parrot (Alisterus scapularis), which is much larger, has a longer tail, lacks any red in the wing and has red lower breast and belly.
