Common to abundant. Sedentary and nomadic.

Habitat
Coastal eucalypt woodlands and forests. Paperbark and banksia woodlands. Flowering street trees, farmlands, gardens.

Eastern Australia, from near Cooktown, Qld south to about Wollongong, New South Wales. Population near Melbourne derived from escapes.

Nest
In a hole of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
2, rarely 3 or 1; white; rounded; about 26 x 20 mm. Incubation: about 25 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in 42 - 56 days. Fed by both parents. Young fledgings return to the nest to roost in the first few days after leaving.

Subspecies
Forms a broad superspecies with Olive-headed Lorikeet (Trichoglossus euteles), Yellow-and-green Lorikeet (Trichoglossus flavoviridis), Mindanao Lorikeet (Trichoglossus johnstoniae) and Pohnpei Lorikeet (Trichoglossus rubiginosus). Formerly considered polytypic, with birds of northern Queensland placed in subspecies neglectus.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
In flight with Purple-crowned Lorikeet (Glossopsitta porphyrocephala), which is smaller and has less red underwings and Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor), which has red undertail coverts and a longer tail.
