Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction due to logging and conversion to agriculture are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Common Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera galatea), Kofiau Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera ellioti) and Numfor Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera carolinae). Commonly regarded as conspecific with Common Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera galatea) and Kofiau Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera ellioti), but morphological differences, combined with geographical isolation, support treatment as separate species.
