Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Kofiau Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera ellioti), Biak Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera riedelii) and Numfor Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera carolinae). Commonly regarded as conspecific with Kofiau Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera ellioti) and Biak Paradise-kingfisher (Tanysiptera riedelii), but morphological differences, combined with geographical isolation, support treatment as separate species.

The following 15 subspecies are recognised:

  • brunhildae Jany, 1955   -  Doi I, off northern Halmahera (northern Moluccas).
  • emiliae Sharpe, 1871   -  Rau I, off northern Halmahera.
  • doris Wallace, 1862   -  Morotai.
  • browningi Ripley, 1983   -  Halmahera.
  • sabrina Gray, GR, 1861   -  Kayoa I, off south-western Halmahera.
  • margarethae Heine, 1860   -  Bacan.
  • obiensis Salvadori, 1877   -  Bisa, Obi Latu and Obi.
  • acis Wallace, 1863   -  Buru.
  • boanensis Mees, 1964   -  Boano I, off north-western Seram.
  • nais Gray, GR, 1861   -  Manipa, Ambon, Seram, Manawoka and Gorong.
  • galatea Gray, 1859   -  Western Papuan Is, east to Geelvink and Triton Bays.
  • meyeri Salvadori, 1889   -  Northern New Guinea.
  • vulcani Rothschild & Hartert, 1915   -  Manam I, off north-eastern New Guinea.
  • minor Salvadori & D'Albertis, 1875   -  Southern New Guinea.
  • rosseliana Tristram, 1889   -  Rossel I, in Louisiade Archipelago.


Similar Species
Little Paradise-Kingfisher (Tanysiptera hydrocharis)
Slightly smaller. Subtle color differences including: outertail feathers entirely blue, with a thin white edge to central two, crown dark blue, wing-coverts dark blue.
