Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black Nunbird (Monasa atra) and Black-fronted Nunbird (Monasa nigrifrons). Nominate and subspecies grandior and fidelis have been considered three distinct species by some authors. Birds from north-eastern Bolivia sometimes separated as subspecies boliviana, but apparently indistinguishable from peruana.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
grandior Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868 - Eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua to western Panama.
fidelis Nelson, 1912 - Caribbean eastern Panama and north-western Colombia (east to southern Córdoba).
pallescens Cassin, 1860 - South-eastern Panama to western Colombia (south to upper R San Juan).
sclateri Ridgway, 1912 - Northern and central Colombia (Magdalena Valley south to northern Tolima).
peruana Sclater, PL, 1856 - Eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela south to eastern Peru, upper Amazonian Brazil (east to R Tapajós) and north-eastern Bolivia.
rikeri Ridgway, 1912 - Amazonian Brazil from R Tapajós east to Piauí.
morphoeus (Hahn & Küster, 1823) - Eastern Brazil (Bahia south to Rio de Janeiro).
