Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Green Aracari (Pteroglossus viridis). Less closely related to Eastern Red-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus bitorquatus) and Ivory-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara). Subspecies humboldti sometimes considered a separate species, but interbreeds sporadically with nominate subspecies in R Madeira region; humboldti placed within Green Aracari (Pteroglossus viridis) by some authors, but appears more appropriately treated with present species. Form from upper Amazonia, described as subspecies didymus, now considered a synonym of humboldti. Form described from R Juruá as "olallae", and initially thought to be full species, found to be hybrid between humboldti and subspecies mariae of Ivory-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
humboldti Wagler, 1827 - South-eastern Colombia and western Brazil (eastern narrowly along Amazon to R Negro mouth in north, broadly east, south of Amazon, to R Madeira, crossing it occasionally in northern and, more often, in south), southern in lowlands east of Andes to north-central Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Humboldt's Aracari (Pteroglossus humboldti).
inscriptus Swainson, 1822 - North-central Brazil south of Amazon (from R Madeira east to Maranhío, north-western Piauí), south to eastern Bolivia, south-western Mato Grosso (in upper R Paraguay drainage) and upper R Tocantins. Also eastern Brazil in Pernambuco and eastern Alagoas.
