Subspecies
Probably related more closely to Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus) and Green Aracari (Pteroglossus viridis) than to Ivory-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara). Subspecies sturmii and reichenowi considered by some authors to constitute two further distinct species, but they clearly share major features with nominate subspecies, and differences between the various populations seem significant enough only for subspecific treatment. Also, subspecies sturmii and reichenowi appear to hybridize, e.g. in south-western Pará (Cururu Valley of upper R Tapajós) and northern Mato Grosso.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
sturmii Natterer, 1843 - North-central Brazil south of Amazon, between R Madeira and R Tapajós, south to Rondônia, Bolivia (eastern Beni, north-eastern Santa Cruz), thence east to central Mato Grosso (R Paraguay drainage, and eastern almost to R Xingu). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Red-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus sturmii).
reichenowi Snethlage, E, 1907 - South of Amazon, between R Tapajós and R Tocantins, south to northern Mato Grosso.
bitorquatus Vigors, 1826 - North-eastern Brazil south of Amazon: Marajó I and east of R Tocantins to Maranhío.
