Subspecies
Belongs to the group that also includes Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos), Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon), Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii) and Black-banded Barbet (Psilopogon javensis). Thought by some to represent Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon) in Java, and this may prove to be a valid interpretation.
