Open evergreen and hill forest, including teak forest, open woodland and woodland fragments. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Lowland Java and Bali.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest destruction due to logging and conversion to agriculture, trapping and trading as a cage-bird, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Belongs to the group that also includes Brown-throated Barbet (Psilopogon corvinus), Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon), Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos) and Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii). Probably closest to Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii), having similar size and sexual monomorphism, or possibly to Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos).

No subspecies.
