Nest
On the ground, composed of figs, straw and leaves, under a bush.

Subspecies
Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus) and Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turnix hottentottus following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). This species is no longer recognised by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

nanus (Sundevall, 1850) - Ghana to Kenya, Uganda and south-eastern Cape Province. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus).
lucianus Stoneham,HF, 1931 - Mts. of South Africa (south-western Cape Province to Port Elizabeth).
insolatus Ripley & Heinrich, 1960 - Montane moorlands of central and southern Ethiopia.
