by id from Grahamstown, Western District, Eastern Cape, South Africa (call)
Subspecies
Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus) and Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turnix hottentottus following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Subspecies nana often considered separate species, Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus), mainly on account of differences in eye colour and migratory habits. No intergradation is reported in the zone of contact, but very few recent records. Possible northern subspecies luciana and insolata now considered inseparable from nana.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nanus (Sundevall, 1850) - Irregularly and locally in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly from Nigeria east to Uganda and Kenya, south to Angola and eastern South Africa; status and limits of range particularly uncertain in western Africa. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus).
hottentottus Temminck, 1815 - Mountains of southern South Africa, in winter rainfall area of southern Cape Province.
