Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,400 m.

Cambodia, China (mainland), Laos (B), Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

Subspecies
Green-legged Partridge (Arborophila chloropus) and Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have recently been lumped into Arborophila chloropus (1994).

Probably forms superspecies with Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini) and Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii). Has been considered a subspecies of Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • chloropus (Blyth, 1859)   -  South-central China (southern Yunnan) south to Burma (south to northern Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
  • peninsularis Meyer de Schauensee, 1941   -  South-western Thailand.
  • tonkinensis (Delacour, 1927)   -  Northern Vietnam. May be a subspecies of Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tonkin Partridge (Arborophila tonkinensis).
  • olivacea (Delacour & Jabouille, 1928)   -  Laos and Kampuchea.
  • cognacqi (Delacour & Jabouille, 1924)   -  Southern Vietnam.
  • merlini (Delacour & Jabouille, 1924)   -  Interior of central Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini).
  • vivida (Delacour, 1926)   -  Coastal hills of central Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini).
