Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Trinidad Piping-guan (Pipile pipile) and Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis). All have often been treated as conspecific. Some authors also include the more distinct Black-fronted Piping-guan (Pipile jacutinga), of which Red-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cujubi) was in past considered a subspecies.

Subspecies nattereri has been considered a distinct species, or subspecies of Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis), but sympatric with subspecies grayi of Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis) in southern Mato Grosso.

Has hybridized in captivity with Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • cujubi (Pelzeln, 1858)   -  North-central Brazil south of R Amazon, from lower R Madeira to northern Pará.
  • nattereri Reichenbach, 1861   -  Southern and western Amazonia in western Brazil, up to border with Bolivia.
