Subspecies nattereri has been considered a distinct species, or subspecies of Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis), but sympatric with subspecies grayi of Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis) in southern Mato Grosso.
Has hybridized in captivity with Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cujubi (Pelzeln, 1858) - North-central Brazil south of R Amazon, from lower R Madeira to northern Pará.
nattereri Reichenbach, 1861 - Southern and western Amazonia in western Brazil, up to border with Bolivia.
