Subspecies
Crypturellus erythropus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was previously split into Red-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus), Crypturellus columbianus and Crypturellus saltuarius following Stotz et al. (1996), who also split Crypturellus idoneus, but all these taxa are lumped into Red-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus) following SACC (2006).
columbianus (Salvadori, 1895) - North-central Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Colombian Tinamou (Crypturellus columbianus).
saltuarius Wetmore, 1950 - Magdalena Valley, north-central Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Magdalena Tinamou (Crypturellus saltuarius).
idoneus (Todd, 1919) - North-eastern Colombia, north-western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Santa Marta Tinamou (Crypturellus idoneus).
