Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Grey-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus duidae) and Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus).
Has been considered subspecies of Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus). Subspecies garleppi may be distinct species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- atrocapillus (Tschudi, 1844) - South-eastern Peru.
- garleppi (von Berlepsch, 1892) - Northern Bolivia.
