Habitat
Forest, woodland, scrub, suburban gardens. From sea-level - 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Mexico (B) (NB), USA (B).

South-western USA south to central Mexico. Winters in central Mexico.

Habits
Active at night and twilight.

Food
Mainly flying insects, taken on the wing.

Voice
Male utters a whistling 'whip, poo-will', repeated often. Also a sharp, short 'quit' and avariety of chuckles, coos and hisses.

Nest
On the ground, in leaf litter, often beneath undergrowth.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 2. Incubation: about 19 - 21 days. Hatching often timed to occur near the full moon. Often two broods.

Young
Fledge: 15 days

Subspecies
Caprimulgus vociferus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) and Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae) following AOU (2010).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • arizonae Brewster, 1881   -  South-western USA south to central Mexico. Winters in central Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae).
  • setosus (van Rossem, 1934)   -  Eastern Mexico.
  • oaxacae Nelson, 1900   -  South-western Mexico.
  • chiapensis Nelson, 1900   -  South-eastern Mexico and highlands of Guatemala.
  • vermiculatus Dickey & van Rossem, 1928   -  Highlands of Honduras and El Salvador.
