On the ground, in leaf litter, often beneath undergrowth.

1 - 2. Incubation: about 19 - 21 days. Hatching often timed to occur near the full moon. Often two broods.

Subspecies
Caprimulgus vociferus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) and Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae) following AOU (2010).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
arizonae Brewster, 1881 - South-western USA south to central Mexico. Winters in central Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae).
setosus (van Rossem, 1934) - Eastern Mexico.
oaxacae Nelson, 1900 - South-western Mexico.
chiapensis Nelson, 1900 - South-eastern Mexico and highlands of Guatemala.
vermiculatus Dickey & van Rossem, 1928 - Highlands of Honduras and El Salvador.
