Subspecies
Related to Black-cowled Oriole (Icterus prosthemelas).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneopectus Brewster, 1888   -  North-western Mexico in interior Sonora and Sinaloa and adjacent western Chihuahua.
  • wagleri Sclater, 1857   -  Central and southern Mexico (from Durango, Coahuila and Nuevo León) southern across central Guatemala, northern El Salvador and south-western Honduras to western Nicaragua.
