Subspecies
Icterus dominicensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Hispaniolan Oriole (Icterus dominicensis) and Black-cowled Oriole (Icterus prosthemelas) following AOU (2000).

Closely related to Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius). Formerly regarded as conspecific with Greater Antillean group of species (Bahama Oriole (Icterus northropi), Cuban Oriole (Icterus melanopsis), Hispaniolan Oriole (Icterus dominicensis) and Puerto Rican Oriole (Icterus portoricensis)), but this treatment not supported by DNA data.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

prosthemelas (Strickland, 1850) - South-eastern Mexico (from Veracruz east to Yucat�n and Quintana Roo) and Caribbean lowlands from Belize, northern Guatemala and northern Honduras south to central Costa Rica.
praecox Phillips, AR & Dickerman, 1965 - South-eastern Costa Rica (Lim�n) and western Panama (Bocas del Toro to Cocl�).
