Subspecies
DNA data indicate that this species is closely related to Scott's Oriole (Icterus parisorum) and Yellow-backed Oriole (Icterus chrysater). Subspecies audubonii intergrades with nominate.
Proposed subspecies richardsoni, described from Oaxaca (Chimalapa, in Tehuantepec), in southern Mexico, synonymized with dickeyae.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
audubonii Giraud Jr, 1841 - Extreme southern USA (southern Texas) and north-eastern Mexico (Nuevo León and Tamaulipas).
graduacauda Lesson, 1839 - Eastern Mexico (San Luis Potosí, southern Tamaulipas and north-western Veracruz).
nayaritensis van Rossem, 1938 - Western Mexico (Nayarit and western Jalisco).
dickeyae van Rossem, 1938 - Southern Guerrero and Oaxaca (Sierra Madre), possibly also Chiapas, in southern Mexico.
