Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data suggest that genus is most closely related to the "hooded" group of sierra-finches (Black-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus atriceps), Peruvian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus punensis), Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus gayi) and Patagonian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus patagonicus)). Also, that it belongs within the tanager family (Thraupidae).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • columbiana Cabanis, 1851   -  Central Venezuela in delta and basin of R Orinoco, and eastern Colombia (Meta and Vichada); has bred once in Trinidad.
  • goeldii von Berlepsch, 1906   -  Amazon Basin of Brazil from about R Purus east to lower R Tapajós and southern Amapá.
  • leopoldinae Hellmayr, 1906   -  East-central Brazil in southern Maranhío, Piauí­, western Pernambuco, northern and western Bahia, Tocantins and Goiás.
