by id from Llanganuco lake area, Ancash, Peru (call)
Subspecies
Molecular-genetic studies indicate that genus belongs in tanager family (Thraupidae). May form a superspecies with Black-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus atriceps), Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus gayi) and Patagonian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus patagonicus) (the "hooded" group), and molecular data suggest that this group may be closely related to Sicalis. Sometimes considered conspecific with Patagonian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus patagonicus), which it resembles in appearance, but may be more closely related to Black-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus atriceps).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chloronotus von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Northern and central Peru (from Cajamarca south to Cuzco).
punensis Ridgway, 1887 - Southern Peru (Puno) and north-western Bolivia (La Paz).
