Habitat
Open woodland, usually near water, rural gardens. From sea-level - 2,700 m.

Range (Guide)

Bolivia (Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija) and north-western and north-central Argentina (Salta, Jujuy and Tucum�n south to eastern San Juan and northern Mendoza, also western C�rdoba and highlands of San Luis).

No subspecies.

Black-and-rufous Warbling-Finch (Poospiza nigrorufa) and Black-and-chestnut Warbling-Finch (Poospiza whitii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Poospiza nigrorufa (2005). Not recognised by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-and-rufous Warbling-Finch (Poospiza nigrorufa).
