Formerly placed with Opal-crowned Tanager (Tangara callophrys) in a separate genus, Tanagrella. Molecular-genetic data indicate that the two are sister-species, and that Paradise Tanager (Tangara chilensis) is sister to both. Geographically isolated subspecies cyanomelas differs somewhat from others in plumage, and may merit treatment as a separate species. A review is warranted.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
iridina (Hartlaub, 1841) - Eastern Colombia (from north-western Meta and southern Vichada) south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and extreme northern Bolivia (Beni), east to southern Venezuela (Amazonas and Bolívar) and western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Negro, lower R Tapajós and north-western Mato Grosso).
velia (Linnaeus, 1758) - The Guianas and northern Brazil north of R Amazon (from R Negro east to Pará).
signata (Hellmayr, 1905) - North-eastern Brazil (north-eastern Pará).
cyanomelas (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1830) - Coastal region of eastern Brazil from Pernambuco south to Rio de Janeiro. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Silver-breasted Tanager (Tangara cyanomelas).
