Habitat
Coastal sand-plain forest and littoral scrub. Also secondary forest, rural gardens and orchards of houses close to forested areas. From sea-level - 600 m.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Loss of restinga habitat, largely to beachfront real-estate development and holiday centres, is the main threat.

Voice
A thin, metallic whistle 'pzeee'.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Burnished-buff Tanager (Tangara cayana), Grenada Tanager (Tangara cucullata), Green-capped Tanager (Tangara meyerdeschauenseei), Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa) and Scrub Tanager (Tangara vitriolina). Has been considered conspecific with Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa), the two then being regarded as partially localized morphs of a single species, differing in colour of mantle and back. However, polymorphism not known to occur in any other member of genus and, further, differences in breeding distribution and habitat suggest that the two are best regarded as separate species.
Similar Species
Male Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa) has a chestnut back. Females are indistinguishable.
