Habitat
Humid, mossy, montane forest and borders in the subtropical zone, mature secondary forest and clearings with a few large trees. From 1,300 - 2,200 m, occasionally down to 900 m.
Colombia: locally on both slopes of western Andes from Risaralda and extreme southern Antioquia south to western Cauca (Munchique area); and central Andes at northern end (Antioquia), on western slope (Quindío, and reported from Ucumari Regional Park, in Risaralda) and on eastern slope (Caldas).

Although genus traditionally placed next to Tangara in linear taxonomic sequences, genetic data, together with glistening plumage, leg morphology, and voice, indicate that the two genera are not closely related.
Similar Species
If seen poorly, could be confused with Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala), which has black mask and throat.
