Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest, subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 2,600 - 3,500 m, occasionally 2,200 - 3,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Formerly placed with Santa Marta Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus melanogenys) and Lacrimose Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus lacrymosus) in a separate genus, Poecilothraupis.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • lunulatus (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1839)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and adjacent Colombia (Norte de Santander southern in eastern Andes to Cundinamarca). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus lunulatus).
  • erythrotus (Jardine & Selby, 1840)   -  Central Andes of Colombia (Caldas, Cauca, Huila, and both slopes in Nariño) south through Ecuador to northern Peru (north of R Marañón, south to R Chamaya).
  • ignicrissa (Cabanis, 1873)   -  Eastern slope of Andes of Peru south of R Marañón (central Cajamarca south of R Chamaya, and from Amazonas south to Juní­n).
  • igniventris (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Eastern slope of Peru (from Juní­n) south to Bolivia (Santa Cruz).
