Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest, subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. From 2,000 - 3,000 m, occasionally 1,600 - 3,200 m.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Formerly placed with Lacrimose Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus lacrymosus) and Fire-bellied Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus igniventris) in a separate genus, Poecilothraupis. May form a superspecies with Lacrimose Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus lacrymosus), and in the past treated as conspecific.
