Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Crimson-backed Tanager (Ramphocelus dimidiatus), Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo) and Brazilian Tanager (Ramphocelus bresilius). A geographical replacement of Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo), with very slight range overlap in Marañón drainage (no known overlap in Huallaga Valley), and some evidence of intergradation. Molecular analysis indicates that levels of divergence between the two (1·1%) are lower than those generally found for other species in genus (2·4 - 4·0%). Subspecies differ minimally.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanogaster (Swainson, 1838) - Northern Peru in San Martín and Huánuco (to confluence of R Huayabamba and R Huallaga) south to north-western Ucayali (R Ucayali).
transitus Zimmer, JT, 1929 - East-central Peru (eastern slope drainage) in upper Huallaga and Chinchao Valleys.
