Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Huallaga Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster), Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo) and Brazilian Tanager (Ramphocelus bresilius). Geographical variation minimal, and taxonomic review of the various described subspecies desirable. Subspecies molochinus possibly indistinguishable from nominate.

Proposed subspecies isthmicus (described from Frijoles Station, on Panama railroad) invalid, as supposed differences attributable to age and individual variation.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • arestus Wetmore, 1957   -  Coiba I, off south-western Panama.
  • dimidiatus Lafresnaye, 1837   -  Panama (except west) eastern across northern Colombia (south to upper Cauca Valley, middle Magdalena Valley, and Norte de Santander) to western Venezuela (Maracaibo region and western slope of Andes).
  • limatus Bangs, 1901   -  Pearl Archipelago, in Gulf of Panama.
  • molochinus Meyer de Schauensee, 1950   -  Upper Magdalena Valley, in Colombia.
  • isthmicus Ridgway, 1901   -  Tropical western and central Panama (east to Río Chepo).
