Subspecies
Molecular-genetic studies place present species within Buthraupis, most closely related to Black-chested Mountain-tanager (Cnemathraupis eximia) and Golden-backed Mountain-tanager (Cnemathraupis aureodorsalis).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

riefferii (Boissonneau, 1840) - Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.
dilutus Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Andes of northern Peru south of Chachapoyas.
elegans (Tschudi, 1844) - Andes of central Peru (Jun��n).
celatus Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Andes of southern Peru below Limbani.
bolivianus (von Berlepsch, 1912) - Andes of Bolivia (La Paz).
