Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,800 - 3,500 m, occasionally 2,000 - 3,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Golden-backed Mountain-tanager (Cnemathraupis aureodorsalis).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • eximia (Boissonneau, 1840)   -  Andes of south-western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and adjacent Colombia (Norte de Santander and Cundinamarca).
  • zimmeri Moore, RT, 1934   -  Colombia at northern end of western Andes (páramos of Frontino and Paramillo) and in central Andes (Caldas-Antioquia border south to Tolima).
  • chloronota Sclater, PL, 1855   -  Southern Colombia on both slopes of Andes (from Huila and Cauca) south to north-western Ecuador.
  • cyanocalyptra Moore, RT, 1934   -  Andes of southern Ecuador south to northern Peru (south to eastern Piura and northern Cajamarca, mostly north of R Marañón).
