Subspecies
May form a superspecies with White-lored Warbler (Myiothlypis conspicillata). Has in the past been considered conspecific with White-lored Warbler (Myiothlypis conspicillata) and Grey-throated Warbler (Myiothlypis cinereicollis), with Grey-throated Warbler (Myiothlypis cinereicollis) being closely related and possibly partly sympatric with present species, but separated altitudinally.
Subspecies form two groups, differing in underpart coloration, the "white-bellied group", with underparts uniformly greyish-white (castaneiceps and chapmani), and "yellow-bellied group", with yellow underparts (all other subspecies). It has been suggested that these groups may constitute two separate species.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
regulus (Todd, 1929) - Andes in Colombia (south to Cauca) and north-western Venezuela.
elata Todd, 1929 - Western Andes in south-western Colombia (Nariņo) and northern Ecuador.
