Subspecies
May form a superspecies with White-lored Warbler (Myiothlypis conspicillata). Has in the past been considered conspecific with White-lored Warbler (Myiothlypis conspicillata) and Grey-throated Warbler (Myiothlypis cinereicollis), with Grey-throated Warbler (Myiothlypis cinereicollis) being closely related and possibly partly sympatric with present species, but separated altitudinally.

Subspecies form two groups, differing in underpart coloration, the "white-bellied group", with underparts uniformly greyish-white (castaneiceps and chapmani), and "yellow-bellied group", with yellow underparts (all other subspecies). It has been suggested that these groups may constitute two separate species.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • regulus (Todd, 1929)   -  Andes in Colombia (south to Cauca) and north-western Venezuela.
  • elata Todd, 1929   -  Western Andes in south-western Colombia (Nariņo) and northern Ecuador.
  • orientalis (Chapman, 1924)   -  Eastern slope of eastern Andes in Ecuador (Pichincha south to Chimborazo).
  • castaneiceps (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1877)   -  Western slope of western Andes in south-western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • chapmani (Todd, 1929)   -  Eastern slope of western Andes in north-western Peru (Cajamarca).
  • inaequalis (Zimmer, JT, 1949)   -  Central Andes in northern Peru (Amazonas and San Martí.
  • coronata (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Eastern Andes from central Peru south to western Bolivia (La Paz).
  • notia Todd, 1929   -  Eastern Andes in central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
