Shrub dominated wetlands.

Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Canada (B), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (NB), Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to Barbados, Dominica, French Polynesia, St Lucia, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Affinities within genus uncertain. Has been considered most closely related to Prairie Warbler (Setophaga discolor) and Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus). Has hybridized with Myrtle Warbler (Setophaga coronata) (of nominate subspecies).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • palmarum (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Breeds central and south-central Canada from Northwest Territories and Alberta east to Ontario; migrates to Florida, Caribbean (mainly Bahamas and Greater Antilles) and, in smaller numbers, Usouthern Atlantic coast and eastern coast of central Middle America.
  • hypochrysea (Ridgway, 1876)   -  Eastern Ontario (locally) and western Quebec east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and north-eastern United States (northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Michigan, Maine); migrates to Gulf of Mexico coast from Texas east to western Florida.
