Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Vitelline Warbler (Setophaga vitellina) and sometimes regarded as conspecific, although such treatment not supported by recent phylogenetic study.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
discolor (Vieillot, 1809) - Breeds south-eastern Canada (south-eastern Ontario) and eastern USA eastern from south-eastern Iowa, eastern Kansas and eastern Texas and southern from extreme southern Maine (but excluding southern coastal areas and most of Florida and Mississippi Valley; isolated population in north-western Michigan); migrates to peninsular Florida, Caribbean and islands off coast (also small numbers on adjacent mainland) of central Middle America.
