Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 1,220 m.

Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (B), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (NB), Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to French Polynesia, Grenada, St Pierre and Miquelon (P).

Estimated population is 1,400,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Vitelline Warbler (Setophaga vitellina) and sometimes regarded as conspecific, although such treatment not supported by recent phylogenetic study.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • discolor (Vieillot, 1809)   -  Breeds south-eastern Canada (south-eastern Ontario) and eastern USA eastern from south-eastern Iowa, eastern Kansas and eastern Texas and southern from extreme southern Maine (but excluding southern coastal areas and most of Florida and Mississippi Valley; isolated population in north-western Michigan); migrates to peninsular Florida, Caribbean and islands off coast (also small numbers on adjacent mainland) of central Middle America.
  • paludicola (Howell, AH, 1930)   -  Coastal southern Florida.
