Subspecies
Recent genetic studies suggest that Tennessee Warbler (Leiothlypis peregrina), Orange-crowned Warbler (Leiothlypis celata), Nashville Warbler (Leiothlypis ruficapilla), Virginia's Warbler (Leiothlypis virginiae), Colima Warbler (Leiothlypis crissalis) and Lucy's Warbler (Leiothlypis luciae) form a clade, separate from the two other current congeners, and should be placed in a separate genus, for which the name Leiothlypis has been proposed. Flame-throated Warbler (Oreothlypis gutturalis) and Crescent-chested Warbler (Oreothlypis superciliosa) appear to be sister to this group.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
celata (Say, 1823) - Breeds Alaska and north-western and southern Canada (east to Quebec); migrates to wintering area mainly in south-eastern USA, smaller numbers south to eastern Mexico and Guatemala.
orestera (Oberholser, 1905) - Breeds western Canada (south-western Yukon, interior British Columbia east to south-eastern Saskatchewan) and southern in Rockies to south-western USA (Arizona and New Mexico); migrates mainly to central Mexico.
lutescens (Ridgway, 1872) - Breeds northern British Columbia and southern in western USA to central California. Winters mainly south-western USA and western Mexico.
sordida (Townsend, CH, 1890) - Coastal southern California and extreme north-western Mexico (northern Baja California), including offshore islands.
