Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna.

Range (Guide)

Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo.

Unknown to Guinea-bissau.

South-eastern Sudan, Ethiopia (absent Ogaden desert and eastern Bale), Somalia (west of 47° east), eastern DRCongo (Ruzizi Valley, in Kivu), eastern Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and from western and southern Angola and southern Zambia east to Malawi and Mozambique and south to central Namibia, central and south-eastern Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and northern and north-eastern South Africa.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Formerly considered conspecific with Broad-tailed Paradise-whydah (Vidua obtusa), Sahel Paradise-whydah (Vidua orientalis), Exclamatory Paradise-whydah (Vidua interjecta) and Togo Paradise-whydah (Vidua togoensis). Molecular-genetic data indicate that it is sister to Broad-tailed Paradise-whydah (Vidua obtusa) and not closest to Sahel Paradise-whydah (Vidua orientalis).

Occasional hybridization recorded with indigobirds (species undetermined).
