Grassland, lightly wooded cattle-pasture, scrub, overgrown gardens, deciduous or degraded monsoon-forest and the margins of cultivation, ricefields.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
May form a superspecies with Java Sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora). In recent study of mitochondrial phylogeny, these two species and Streak-headed Mannikin (Lonchura tristissima) were found to comprise two clades that are basal to the other members of the genus.
Similar Species
Escaped Java Sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora) lacks chocolate-brown and has pink bill.
