Subspecies
Southern subspecies leucosticta sometimes treated as a separate species, White-spotted Mannikin (Lonchura leucosticta). However an apparent hybrid with hypomelaena recorded in south-western (R Noord area) and existence of an intermediate or hybrid population in south-eastern (Ihu and upper R Purari east to Port Moresby) indicate that it intergrades with other subspecies. South-eastern subspecies bigilalae possibly a hybrid population.

Proposed subspecies moresbyae (described from specimen thought to have come from Port Moresby area), apparently from same area as bigilalae, but without precise data on locality, date, collector or field observations. Further study needed.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • tristissima (Wallace, 1865)   -  North-western New Guinea (Vogelkop Peninsula east to southern shores of Geelvink Bay).
  • hypomelaena Stresemann & Paludan, 1934   -  Western New Guinea from Weyland Mts area east to R Mamberamo and, in south, to R Noord.
  • calaminoros (Reichenow, 1916)   -  Northern New Guinea from region of R Mamberano east to Huon Gulf and Cape Nelson, including Karkar I, Long I and Umboi.
  • leucosticta (D'Albertis and Salvadori, 1879)   -  South-central New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-spotted Mannikin (Lonchura leucosticta).
  • bigilalae Restall, 1995   -  South-eastern New Guinea (southern slope of the south-eastern Peninsula; distribution incompletely known, but reported from Lakekamu basin southeast to Rigo.
  • moresbyensis Restall, 1995   -  South-eastern Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby).
