Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry forest, dry savanna, dry shrubland.

Angola (B), Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B), Kenya (B), Malawi (B), Mozambique (B), Somalia (B), South Africa (B), Swaziland (B), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B), Zambia (B), Zimbabwe (B).

Southern Somalia, eastern Kenya and Tanzania south to Zambia, southern Mozambique and north-eastern and eastern South Africa.

Subspecies
Black-and-white Mannikin (Spermestes bicolor) and Red-backed Mannikin (Lonchura nigriceps) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include nigriceps as a subspecies of Black-and-white Mannikin (Spermestes bicolor).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigriceps (Cassin, 1852)   -  Central Kenya and southern Somalia to eastern Angola, south-eastern DR Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe and eastern South Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-and-white Mannikin (Spermestes bicolor).
  • woltersi Schouteden, 1956   -  South-eastern DR Congo and north-western Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-and-white Mannikin (Spermestes bicolor).
