Subspecies
African Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis) and Black-chinned Quailfinch (Ortygospiza gabonensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped as Ortygospiza atricollis following Payne and Sorenson (2007).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of African Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- gabonensis Lynes, 1914 - Rio Muni to Gabon and central Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo River). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of African Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis).
- fuscata Sclater, WL, 1932 - Northern Angola, southern DRCongo and north-western Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of African Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis).
- dorsostriata van Someren, 1921 - Eastern DRCongo east to southern and western Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of African Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis).
