Subspecies
No subspecies.
Was earlier sometimes referred to by name Estrilda cinderella (described from Benguela, in western Angola), but present name has priority. Type specimen said to have originated from Sío Tomé, but documentation uncertain. The species not recorded there since, and it is believed that its presence at that time, if true, was probably result of escape from captivity. Has sometimes been thought to be part of a superspecies formed by Black-tailed Waxbill (Estrilda perreini) and Lavender Waxbill (Estrilda coerulescens).
