Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Lavender Waxbill (Estrilda coerulescens), possibly with Cinderella Waxbill (Estrilda thomensis) included in same grouping.
Proposed subspecies poliogastra (described from Inhambane, in southern Mozambique) is treated as a synonym of incana.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
perreini (Vieillot, 1817) - Southern Gabon, southern PRCongo, southern and eastern DRCongo, Angola, Zambia, southern Tanzania and Malawi.
incana Sundevall, 1850 - Southern Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, Mozambique, northern and eastern South Africa and eastern Swaziland.
