Subspecies
Forms a species group with Brown Accentor (Prunella fulvescens), Mongolian Accentor (Prunella koslowi), Black-throated Accentor (Prunella atrogularis), Radde's Accentor (Prunella ocularis) and Arabian Accentor (Prunella fagani). Population breeding in north-central part of range (between R Khatanga and R Lena) of uncertain racial identity and probably belongs to nominate subspecies, and tentatively included within it.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
montanella (Pallas, 1776) - Breeds extreme north-eastern Europe and western Siberia (from Bol'shezemel'skaya tundra, on western side of Ural Mts) east to R Lena and, in southern Russia, patchily from upper R Ob, upper R Yenisey region (north of Krasnoyarsk) and Altai east to Amur region.
